Exploring Colleges & Careers can be both exciting and stressful. There are many questions to ask and an enormous amount of information out there to help your search.  It can overwhelm as much as it can assist.  The best advice is to start early.  It is never too early to explore college majors and think about your career.  We hope this page has some productive and motivating starting points for your college major & career exploration. 

 

 

Pre-College Summer Programs

Get a college experience before your senior year of high school! There are plenty of opportunities for Pre-college summer programs and academic and leaderships forums. There are various types of programs available at local and prestigious universities. College credits can be earned at some of these colleges and there are scholarships available. If you are interested in getting a taste of college early and building a resume for college applications, here are a few links to get you started:

 

PA GOVERNORS SCHOOL FOR THE SCIENCES

The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) was established in order to provide a summer enrichment experience in the sciences and mathematics for talented Pennsylvania high school students and to encourage them to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The program provides instruction in biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science, with emphasis on collaborative learning and team research.

PA SCHOOL FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES

The 2019 Pennsylvania  School for Excellence in the Agricultural Sciences offers a four-week summer residential program held on University Park campus for academically talented and gifted high school students (rising seniors) from throughout Pennsylvania.

IACOCCA GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP INTENSIVE

The Iacocca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive brings American high school sophomores and juniors (ages 16-17) together with international high school students from all regions of the world for four weeks to live and learn together at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.  Students learn about entrepreneurship, globalization, team building, project management, leadership and working within a culturally diverse environment.

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH HEALTH CAREER SCHOLARS ACADEMY

The dynamic world of health care plus the expertise of the University of Pittsburgh academics and facilities.  This educational mixture shapes a unique, academically rigorous, hands-on campus experience for students attending the Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) each summer.  The Academy is often a springboard for future studies in medicine.

SUMMERFUEL

Summerfuel’s Pre-College Program at Tufts offers an exciting opportunity for curious and passionate students who thrive in a supportive and engaging environment. Our Pre-College summer programs for high school students inspire exploration and discovery, with dynamic seminar and workshop options. NOTRE DAME SUMMER SCHOLARS

Summer Scholars participants spend two intense weeks in one of 22 exciting programs of study. We keep the classes small and personal attention from Notre Dame faculty high. The coursework is a true preview of college academics—it is both rigorous and rewarding, and students earn one college credit upon the completion of a program track. Students collaborate on coursework outside designated class times, as they would in any college setting. There is also ample time to enjoy the social facets of college life, especially those unique to Notre Dame.

BIG FUTURE: College Majors & Career Search.

This a great tool to get started and has so much in one place.  You can search either by major or career, get an information capsule on that major/career, see related majors/careers, see helpful high school courses on for that major/career, and find colleges that have that major.  All in a few clicks, you can learn if a major/career is right for you. 
 

 

JOB SHADOWING

Students are strongly encouraged to do at least one job shadowing experience during their high school years.  Students may be excused from school to job shadow. Job Shadowing is an academically motivating activity designed to give students the unique opportunity of an up-close look at the world of work and provide the answer to the commonly asked question, “Why do I have to learn this?” Students can find job shadow opportunities in the community, at their parents’ place of employment, or by stopping in the Guidance Office.

COLLEGE VISITS

Are you really going to pay to study and live at a College that you never visited?  College visits are a must before applying.  All Bishop McCort students are encouraged to visit a college campus.  Junior and Senior students are afford an excused absences for a planned and approved college visit.  Juniors are permitted 2 excused college visits and Seniors are permitted 3 excused college visits.  Permission slips are available in guidance office or the attachment below.
