Summer Reading Books Announced

Summer Reading for 2011-2012

The Bishop McCort High School English Department, in an attempt to improve comprehension and interpretation skills, is assigning two Summer Reading books to students in all grade levels. Students are to read the two books from the list provided for their grade level. (Note: Senior students enrolled in the AP English course have different requirements for Summer Reading.) Synopses of the novels have been provided for students to preview before reading the selections.

Students should plan to use their summer reading time effectively so that the reading and review of the books are completed before the start of school. Objective tests on these books will be administered by the end of the first full week of school in the fall. Grades on these tests will be a part of the first quarter English grade. Books and notebooks will not be allowed during testing. In the event of an excused absence on the test day, students will be required to complete a make-up exam.

The novels selected for the different grade levels have been chosen for their literary merit as well as elements such as plot development, characterization, and theme. Throughout the school year, English teachers may choose to incorporate these selections in various ways in their lessons.

Your support of the Summer Reading program is appreciated. Encouraging your child to read more may help develop verbal skills and comprehension for college entrance examinations.

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the books to be read for this assignmentThese books are also available at most public libraries, bookstores, and online sources.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Durinda L. Reaman

English Department Chairperson
