ImPACT: Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing
When is ImPACT PreTesting being conducted?
Bishop McCort Catholic High School is implementing an innovative program for the 2011-2012 school year for our student athletes. The program is called ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing). The program will assist physicians and athletic trainers in evaluation and treatment of concussions/ head injuries incurred by the student athletes. ImPACT is a computerized exam utilized in many professional, collegiate and high school sports programs across the country to assist with successfully diagnosing and managing concussions/ head injuries. If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury during competition, ImPACT is used to help determine the severity of the injury and the completion of the healing process.
The computerized exam is given to the athlete before beginning any contact sport practice or competition. This non-invasive test is set up in “video-game” type format and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. The ImPACT test is a pre-season physical for the brain. It provides baseline information such as memory, reaction time, processing speed and concentration. It, however, is not an IQ test.
If a concussion is suspected, the test is re-taken and compared to the baseline information to better determine injury severity and recovery from the concussion. The information is shared with the parents, athletic trainer, team physician and/or physician of your choice. It enables a sound decision to be made as to the time when return-to-play is appropriate and safe.
The ImPACT test is non-invasive and poses no risk to your student athlete. ImPACT provides the best available information to allow us to manage concussions appropriately and prevent brain damage that is associated with multiple concussions. We are trying to keep your child’s health and safety at the forefront of the athletic experience.
This examination will be made mandatory for participation in all contact sports. Your student athlete will be informed when to report to the school for the testing. Athletes will not be permitted to start practice until the baseline exam is completed. A signed permission slip is required for students to be tested.
If you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to contact the school at 814-536-8991.
The next ImPACT Testing for the 2011-12 school year will be conducted on:
Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 4:00 pm at the school. Students should meet in the main gym. ALL students participating in the following fall sports must have this testing: football, cheerleading, soccer, and volleyball.
