St. Patrick's Day at McCort

Mr. Hollern was a beloved Social Studies teacher at Bishop McCort for 43 years. Mr. Hollern died in 2008 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Mr. Hollern was passionate about St. Patrick's Day. Every year he donned a green suit, decorated the school, and went all out to celebrate the day he loved so much. Because of this, we now use St. Patrick's Day as a way to honor a man who dedicated his life to Bishop McCort students.

Mr. Hollern was committed to teaching geography as a part of his Social Studies classes. In fact, if you ask any of his many former students, they will recall being tested on maps until they were able to correctly identify every location correctly. He was also an avid archivist who kept meticulous records about our school. Mr. Hollern had a great sense of humor and was certain to laugh every day. He loved McCort so much so, that even when he became sick, he often came to school when perhaps the average person in that situation would not. And why did he do this? Because he couldn't think of any other place he'd rather be. Our St. Patrick's Day celebration is part of the legacy of Mr. Paul Hollern.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated with an all-school Mass, a visit from members of the Hibernians (many of whom are McCort alumni), the playing of Irish music at lunch, as well as a special dessert for everyone.

Selling specially designed t-shirts is a part of this annual celebration. Students, faculty, and staff who purchase the shirt wear it on the day of the celebration.

We know that while we can all be Irish for only one day, we are always & FOREVER A CRUSHER!

All proceeds from the sale of these shirts benefit the Paul Hollern Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is used to help enable students to attend Bishop McCort and the Paul Hollern Athletic Dedication Scholarships which are awarded annually to two graduating seniors, one male and one female, who are multi-sport athletic letter-winners. To date, the funds have provided financial support to over a dozen students.
