NEW Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the #1 cause of death on school campuses today, and the #1 killer of student athletes.

Currently, the survival rate for out of hospital cardiac arrest is less than 10%.

Recently, we have obtained 3 brand new Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to be better prepared for a cardiac emergency in our school. These defibrillators were made available through the generous donation of Dr. Samir Hadeed, M.D. of Johnstown Heart and Vascular. The defibrillators are now located in the main gym, the Bach Student Union and the Bach Wellness Center. All 3 of these devices are mobile units and can be taken out of the building to meet the needs of our students.

This past October, students in grades 7 & 8 were introduced to hands only CPR. In addition, all faculty and staff were trained and certified through the American Red Cross in CPR and cardiac emergency response, including the use of an AED.

But, this is only the beginning. We will have additional training for staff members with hands on AED simulations in January, and are currently working on written plans for Sudden Cardiac Arrest, including drills, procedure manuals along with CPR and AED curriculums.

Our goal is for DMMS/BMCHS to become one of the first designated “Heart Safe School’s” in the state of Pennsylvania. Why? Because we believe preparing and training to respond to cardiac emergencies will help as a necessary part of providing a safe environment for all of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

And, when we believe, we can achieve MORE.
