Christian Service

Christian Service Program Requirement
Each student at Bishop McCort Catholic High School must successfully complete 38 hours of Christian service annually.
Time Sequence What is Required and When it is Due?
First 9 Weeks. Service Contract is due by the end of the first marking period describing what service will be performed. This contract is to be signed by the student and parent and approved by a member of the Religious Studies Department.
Second 9 Weeks. 19 hours of service must be complete. A voucher form must be signed by the person at whatever parish or agency the service was performed.
Third 9 Weeks. The balance of the 38 hours must be completed. A voucher form must be presented with the same requirements as above.
Fourth 9 Weeks. A prayerful reflection will be written by the student concerning their experience helping others. This will be directed by your religion teacher in a prayerful setting.
NOTE:    Failure to complete the Christian Service requirements for each of these phases will result in a failing grade in your Religion class for the nine week marking period.
How do I find hours?
Your first obligation is to your parish. At least half of the hours you perform must be done at your place of worship. Each pastor has a list of names of the people who attend McCort from his parish.  We will check with him to see if you have volunteered. Serving Mass, helping with festivals, church dinners, or any other service to the parish will count toward your 38 hours.
What else can I do?
We suggest you contact one of the volunteer agencies in town. Any of the hospitals, Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Food For Families Warehouse, Goodwill, any of the care centers or nursing homes in which to do service are all valid places.

Can I find some hours through McCort?
YES! Key Club, Christian Service Club, National Honor Society, Ecology Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and a variety of other groups at McCort offer their members and in fact require service hours. Check with school teachers and coaches for various projects they might like to accomplish here at McCort.
To whom do I give my service voucher when I am done?
The only person who can receive your voucher is your religion teacher. They will also have all the other paper work you will need. Do not drop off anything in the office or give it to anyone else, or you will not receive credit.

Can I receive any payment for the service I do?
NO!  This would negate any hours you have performed.
Can I claim the same hours for my Confirmation requirement?
Most parishes will allow you to receive double credit for your service hours. However, you are responsible to provide the required forms or vouchers.
