I am Michael Schellhammer, one of the social studies teachers at Bishop McCort Catholic High School, now in my 5th year of teaching.King John's Castle (Irish: Caisleán Luimnigh) is a 13th-century castle located on King's Island in Limerick, Ireland, next to the River Shannon. I have traveled to Europe, lived in Ireland (4 months) and Pittsburgh (9 years), researched the Pyramids and written numerous blogs on historic and religious topics. I am a 6th generation Johnstown native.

I love being a teacher of social studies and writing, for numerous reasons. The first reason I love being a teacher is the opportunity to impart my knowledge to the future leaders, writers, journalists, and citizens of this world. I know that I have the skills to patiently guide these young people through the issues of their teenage years.
 
 
 
 
The second reason why I love being a teacher is my LOVE for the subjects I teach. In my career, I have taught about ancient civilizations, ancient myths, American history, British literature, Shakespeare, Romanticism, the economies of sub-Saharan Africa, THE AVENGERS, obscure cultures, geography, and American politics.

The third and best reason why I love being a teacher is the opportunity to share my faith with young people. I spent over 2 years working with the youth in the West Hills of Pittsburgh, as a part of my church's youth program. I am uniquely knowledgeable about the various problems that influence the students that come into my classroom.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
I know that by sharing my faith, and God's love, I can guide all young people into a better understanding of God, His will, and how that should influence their actions and their feelings. Faith is the one thing that confirms all of my work to be a teacher. I truly believe that no other career would fulfill my life, like teaching.


 
Other Responsibilities...
 
Scholastic Quiz
I am the coach/moderator for the Bishop McCort Scholastic Quiz team and have been for all my years at McCort. Our season starts in mid-September and extends to mid-November. We play in the West-Central Scholastic Quiz League, which includes schools like Westmont, Richland, and Somerset. In the Fall of 2014, our team went to the championship, falling to Penn Cambria. Our lead scorer, Noah Huffman, would achieve Salutatorian, and another one of our players, Annu Suresh, earned the honor of Valedictorian for the class of 2015. In the Fall 2015 season, we sadly missed the playoffs by 1 win. Our best player, Sarah Nagy, was 8th in the league in scoring and a top 10 student at graduation. Another one of our players, Dan Beahr, was 3rd in the class and is now attending West Virginia University. For the 2016-2017 season, we finished with a regular season record of 6-0! In the playoff rounds at Richland Jr/Sr High School on November 16th, we lost in the first round to the eventual champion Somerset. I am excited to begin a new season of Scholastic Quiz for 2017-2018!

Model United Nations
A renewed effort this year is being put into starting a Model U.N. club here at BMCHS. Model U.N. gives students an idea of the issues that influence foreign policy for the United States, as well as how issues influence decisions and actions made by other nations. Model U.N. organizes students into teams, who then are given a country to represent. They are given a global problem and are tasked with using information about their given country to solve it, with the help and cooperation of other teams/nations. The Fall of 2017 will see meetings with interested students, club practices, and hopefully a regional tournament!
 
International Program Coordinator
My newest responsibility is as Bishop McCort's International Program Coordinator. This involves working with the international students, making their experience at BMCHS a positive one. I work to place students with host families, coordinate travel, and keep up the lines of communication between the students, host families, and the students' families.
